North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the 80th anniversary celebration of the Air Force, known as Aviation Day. During the event, he announced plans to equip the Air Force with new strategic military assets and assign it significant missions.
According to the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the commemoration took place on November 28 at Galma Airfield, home to the 59th Hero Regiment of the 2nd Air Division.
Kim was accompanied by his daughter, Ju-ae, referred to as the respected daughter in the report. This marks Ju-ae’s first public appearance in over three months, following her attendance at China’s victory celebration in early September.
The newspaper reported that Kim first paid respects at the bust of Air Force hero Gil Yong-jo. He was then greeted by Air Force Commander Kim Kwang-hyok and Political Commissar Um Ju-ho before extending congratulations to all Air Force personnel.
In his address, Kim stated that the Air Force will be entrusted with crucial new missions and equipped with advanced strategic military assets. While specifics were not provided, this suggests a likely boost to the Air Force’s combat capabilities.
Kim emphasized that the Party and the nation have high expectations for the Air Force, which now plays a key role in the nuclear deterrence strategy. The Air Force must decisively counter and neutralize any enemy reconnaissance activities or military provocations that threaten the airspace, using overwhelming morale and aggressive tactics.
Since unveiling new attack and reconnaissance drones – the Saetbyeol-4 and Saetbyeol-9 – in 2023, North Korea has been focused on enhancing its Air Force’s unmanned aerial capabilities. Kim’s mention of countering espionage activities suggests potential new military measures related to drone technology.
To boost morale, Kim awarded the Order of Kim Jong Il to the Air Force on its 80th anniversary, as proposed by the Party’s Central Committee and Central Military Commission.
The leader also observed a commemorative air show, specifically praising female pilots An Ok-kyung and Son Ju-hyang for their twin formation flight.
The day’s events concluded with Kim attending a performance and hosting a banquet to honor Air Force personnel, according to the newspaper report.
