On December 13, the People Power Party criticized the ongoing disagreements between the Ministry of Unification and the diplomatic corps ahead of the launch of a consultative body to coordinate North Korea policies between South Korea and the United States. They stated that if this reflects a power struggle over South Korea’s national security, it is both deplorable and embarrassing to the public.
Chief Spokesperson Park Seong-hoon emphasized in a statement that it’s crucial to recognize that the greatest threat to the foundation of the South Korea-U.S. alliance is the internal discord within the Lee Jae Myung administration’s North Korea policy.
Recently, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young highlighted concerns about the National Security Council (NSC) composition on December 11. This comment appeared to contradict National Security Advisor Wi Seong-lac’s assertion that there were no issues with the NSC’s structure, reigniting speculation about rifts within the government’s foreign policy and security teams.
Both Minister Chung and Advisor Wi have previously expressed conflicting views on joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises. This has led to speculation about a power struggle preceding the establishment of a high-level consultative body for coordinating North Korea policies.
Chief Spokesperson Park asserted that National security directly impacts the lives and safety of its citizens. He added that contradictory messages regarding crucial matters like joint military exercises, which are the cornerstone of the U.S.-South Korea alliance, not only create public anxiety but also severely undermine alliance trust, ultimately benefiting only Kim Jong Un.
Park concluded that the public is tired of witnessing this alarming discord in security matters. It’s now incumbent upon President Lee to explain how he intends to safeguard South Korea’s national security and protect its citizens.
