North Korea revealed on Thursday that it has successfully test-fired a new anti-aircraft missile system. Defense analysts suggest this could be Pyongyang’s answer to the U.S. THAAD system.

The state-run Rodong Sinmun reported that the launch took place on Wednesday, with Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un personally overseeing the test.

The missile was described as a high-altitude long-range anti-aircraft missile system, marking its inaugural test. Experts believe this new weapon bears similarities to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system deployed by South Korea.

According to the report, the missile successfully engaged a simulated Target at an altitude of 124 miles.

The newspaper emphasized that this test launch is part of ongoing efforts by the country’s Missile Bureau and Anti-Aircraft Weapon System Research Institute to enhance North Korea’s air defense capabilities.
