North Korea has established a large-scale greenhouse agricultural complex in the Hwiwado district of Sinuiju, North Pyongan Province, an area that had previously suffered significant flood damage. This development comes just one year after construction began.

On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, reported that Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, attended the inauguration ceremony of the Sinuiju Comprehensive Greenhouse Farm the previous day. The newspaper hailed the farm as another proud monumental creation demonstrating the great transformation of the Kim era and a proud gift of loyalty from our young builders to the 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

The ceremony was attended by party secretaries Cho Yong-won and Pak Jong-chon, along with government and military officials, young builders, and local residents. Kim Chol-sam, the responsible secretary of the North Pyongan Provincial Party Committee, delivered the inauguration speech.

Secretary Kim emphasized that the large-scale greenhouse complex was completed in just one year, calling it an achievement symbolizing the remarkable transformation of 2026.

In his congratulatory speech, General Secretary Kim remarked that they are witnessing an astonishing transformation that surprises even him, highlighting the establishment of a new living space in an area previously ravaged by natural disasters. He praised the soldiers and young builders as the elite forces and vanguard of the revolution.

Kim also stressed the importance of science and technology in expanding vegetable production following the inauguration. During his visit to the Sinuiju Vegetable Science Research Center, he positively evaluated the implementation of an intelligent integrated production system and resource recycling technology, stating that these advanced technologies should be disseminated to greenhouses nationwide. He also mentioned the need for seed development and a national-level integrated management organization to enhance quality and nutritional value.

General Secretary Kim stated that the party’s intention is to ensure that the people benefit as soon as possible by surpassing global standards in greenhouse size, cultivation technology, and production. He asserted that it is currently undergoing a significant transformation process for the fundamental change of local areas.

The newspaper promoted this farm construction as one of the flagship projects demonstrating the party’s vision for regional development, expected to contribute to local economic growth and improved living conditions for residents. It particularly emphasized that this serves as a gift of loyalty, showcasing the achievements of the youth and military ahead of the 9th Party Congress.

It’s worth noting that General Secretary Kim had previously announced the construction of a large greenhouse farm in the Sinuiju area, which suffered from summer floods in 2024, and attended the groundbreaking ceremony in February of last year. He subsequently conducted on-site inspections in August, September, October, and November of last year, as well as in January of this year.

North Korea has promoted the Sinuiju greenhouse as the largest of its kind, covering 450 jeongbo (approximately 4.5 square kilometers), which is about 1.5 times the size of Yeouido, a large island in Seoul.
