On International Women’s Day, March 8, Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, emphasized the crucial role of women in advancing socialism.

North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Monday that a commemorative performance took place at the Pyongyang Gymnasium the previous day. Kim attended the event alongside his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter, Ju Ae.

In his address, Kim acknowledged the recent 9th Party Congress had heightened his appreciation for women’s contributions, stating that the women will play a pivotal role in fostering a more harmonious and prosperous nation.

He lauded the strength and dedication of North Korean women, saying that across all sectors of the revolution – from national defense to socialist construction, in factories and rural areas – the women demonstrate unwavering resilience, matching their male counterparts in determination and integrity.

Kim urged all women to fulfill their sacred duty to the era, history, and homeland by promoting national prosperity, social harmony, and unity.

The event was attended by high-ranking party and government officials, central committee members, and exemplary female workers from Pyongyang’s institutions and enterprises. Foreign diplomats were also invited.

Notably, the front row of the viewing area included prominent female officials such as Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, Kim Yo-jong, head of the Party’s General Department, and Ri Chun-hi, a well-known news anchor from Korean Central Television.

The performance featured a diverse program, including patriotic songs and traditional folk music, creating an atmosphere of jubilation as women celebrated what the paper called the happiest occasion.
