The Cyber Operations Command of South Korea announced its participation in the international cyber exercise “Cyber Flag” from Monday to Friday.

Cyber Flag, orchestrated by U.S. Cyber Command, is an annual cyber defense exercise. Since its inception in 2011, it has primarily involved the Five Eyes alliance nations: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The South Korean military has been a consistent participant in this exercise, following agreements reached during the 8th ROK-U.S. Defense Cyber Cooperation Working Group (CCWG) in May 2023 and the 55th ROK-U.S Security Consultative Meeting (SCM) in November of the same year.

This year’s exercise will be held at the National Cyber Range Complex in Norfolk, Virginia. The Five Eyes nations and South Korea will collaborate, with the ROK military dispatching seven elite personnel. These troops will hone their defensive strategies against simulated cyber attacks on critical national infrastructure and engage in threat information sharing and analysis with other participating nations.

A spokesperson for the Cyber Operations Command of South Korea stated that the exercise will provide a valuable opportunity to enhance defensive cyber capabilities through realistic training scenarios. He further explained that the Cyber Operations Command will continue to strengthen its cyber alliance with U.S. Cyber Command through joint exercises and exchanges of cyber experts and technologies.
