The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment announced on June 7 that Deputy Minister Lee Ho-hyun will visit Washington D.C. from June 8 to June 10 to discuss cooperation in nuclear energy and energy sectors.

This visit commemorates the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea Nuclear Agreement and aims to strengthen collaboration in nuclear power, power grids, and energy supply chains. It also seeks to jointly address the increasing power demand due to the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) and energy security concerns.

On the first day of his visit, the Deputy Minister will attend a conference celebrating the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea Nuclear Agreement. There, he will review the achievements of nuclear cooperation between the two nations and discuss future directions for next-generation nuclear power collaboration.

He will then participate in the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, meeting with officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and representatives from global energy companies. The discussions will focus on innovations in power systems and strategies to enhance energy security in the era of electrification. Deputy Minister Lee is also scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on related topics at this event.

The U.S.-Korea Energy Business Forum will take place on the final day of his visit. The two countries previously agreed to regularize this forum in conjunction with the Energy Ministers’ meeting scheduled for April 2024. The forum will address cooperation in energy financing, investment, power grids, energy storage systems (ESS), and energy supply chains.

During this visit, the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment aims to expand not only intergovernmental cooperation but also investment and business collaboration between companies from both countries.

Deputy Minister Lee stated that he hopes to elevate the 70-year-long U.S.-Korea nuclear alliance to an energy and industrial alliance, and to create a public-private cooperation model where the companies can jointly lead the global energy market.
