On August 21, National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik met with Michelle Park Steel, the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, emphasizing the critical nature of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
During their afternoon meeting, Speaker Cho expressed that he deeply appreciates President Donald Trump’s resolve and commitment to rekindling dialogue on the Korean Peninsula, which has been in a state of tension, and to establishing a stable peace framework.
He noted that this year marks both the 250th anniversary of America’s founding and the 73rd year of the U.S.-South Korea alliance. He hopes the nations’ friendship and cooperation, rooted in shared values of freedom and democracy, will continue to strengthen.
Cho highlighted that given Ambassador Steel’s extensive experience in U.S. politics, including her tenure in the House of Representatives, coupled with her profound understanding and affection for Korea, he believes she will be instrumental in advancing U.S.-South Korea relations.
He added that it would be beneficial to have a counterpart to the Korea-U.S. Congressional Coalition in the U.S. Congress. The establishment of such a group would significantly bolster our bilateral ties. He hopes the Ambassador, with her substantial contributions to U.S.-Korea congressional exchanges, can assist in this endeavor.
Speaker Cho also mentioned that the Korean National Assembly houses a significant symbol of U.S.-Korea friendship. During the Korean War, the U.S. Embassy donated 700 books to the refugee parliament, which was pivotal in establishing our National Assembly Library. He then presented a plaque of appreciation.
Ambassador Steel responded that her experience in Congress has given her a deep appreciation for the legislature’s crucial role in shaping foreign policy and international relations. The 73-year history of the alliance underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy.
She expressed hope that her legislative background would help deepen bilateral relations and foster mutual understanding of both countries’ legislative processes, stating that she looks forward to close collaboration with Speaker Cho.
Regarding the proposed U.S.-Korea Congressional Coalition, Steel emphasized that revitalizing this relationship is crucial. Communication at the legislative level is paramount. She’s eager to contribute in any way she can.
Steel, a Korean-American, graciously accepted the plaque, saying “Thank you” in Korean. She quipped that she thought those 700 books were on loan and they’re supposed to return them, adding that she’s thrilled it sparked the creation of the National Assembly Library.
The meeting concluded with a private discussion between Cho and Steel. Recently, President Trump has intensified pressure on South Korea, raising issues about scaling back joint military exercises and contributions to operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
