Bronny James, currently playing alongside his father, LeBron James, a living legend in the National Basketball Association (NBA), has expressed his determination to overcome the criticism directed at him.
Bronny attended a press conference on Tuesday at the LA Lakers training complex in El Segundo, California, where rookie players were introduced.
Previously, Bronny was selected as the 55th pick in the second round by the Lakers in the NBA draft held on June 28.
Two days later, LeBron terminated his existing contract with the Lakers and signed a new deal that would come in below the maximum three-year, $162 million, bringing him and Bronny together as teammates. This marks the first occurrence in NBA history of a father and son playing on the same team.
However, some argue that Bronny’s high draft pick as a professional player was influenced by the halo effect of his superstar father.
In response, Bronny stated, “I might not deserve an opportunity. But I’ve been dealing with stuff like this for my whole life. It’s nothing different. It’s more amplified for sure, but I can get through it.” He expressed his confidence in overcoming the heightened pressure since joining the Lakers.
He also emphasized that he didn’t rush to the NBA stage immediately after his first year to play alongside his father, who is still an active player.
Bronny expressed his desire to carve out his own reputation, emphasizing his commitment to daily improvement and fulfilling his role within the team. He also mentioned that he has never considered playing on the same team as his father.
Bronny, then a college student, collapsed from a heart attack during a game in July 2023 and subsequently missed many games due to health issues.
He stated, “I was able to refine my game during my time off,” adding, “I didn’t have many opportunities in college, but I believe I’ll have more chances to showcase my abilities in the future.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick highly evaluates Bronny’s potential: “His instincts, athleticism, offensive points, defense, shooting, passing, etc., are exceptional. He will become an excellent NBA player through our player development program.”
Meanwhile, it was reported that LeBron quietly watched his son’s press conference from the back of the gymnasium that day.
