On Monday, tech industry insiders and international media outlets spotlighted a Reddit post featuring before-and-after photos of an iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange. The images show the device transforming to a rose gold hue just two weeks after purchase, with the original orange barely visible.

The Reddit user expressed frustration, stating they wanted an orange iPhone, not a pink one, and noted that the color change became more uniform over time, settling into a consistent rose gold.

In Korea, a dissatisfied customer took to an online forum to voice their displeasure. They reported that their iPhone 17 in Cosmic Orange, despite being protected by a clear case, exhibited discoloration in the exposed areas. The user question on how can this happen to a phone costing 1.79 million KRW (about 1,255 USD), highlighting the premium price of the device.

Some Deep Blue model owners have also reported color changes starting around the camera island and gradually spreading across the device.

This phenomenon has been dubbed ColorGate on social media platforms.

Reports from various countries, including Japan and Vietnam, indicate that the discoloration primarily affects the aluminum frame and camera housing. Interestingly, the Ceramic Shield back panel retains its original color, resulting in an unintended two-tone aesthetic.

Tech experts attribute this issue to insufficient sealing during the aluminum oxidation and anodizing processes.

Apple has historically relied on robust anodized sealing layers on its premium smartphones to prevent such problems. However, analysts suggest that certain production lines may have failed to properly seal the protective coatings, leading to oxidation—a natural chemical reaction in aluminum.

Some specialists propose that extended ultraviolet (UV) exposure may further exacerbate the discoloration. One expert noted that the color change began after brief sun exposure, explaining that UV light can break down the molecular structure of the organic dyes used in anodized aluminum, causing fading.

Apple has yet to issue an official statement addressing these concerns. Apple Korea is also awaiting guidance from the company’s headquarters.

In the U.S., customers experiencing discoloration are advised to document the issue with photographs and contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assessment. If the defect is determined to be a material one within the warranty period, affected devices may qualify for free replacement.

An industry insider revealed that Apple is believed to be internally acknowledging the issue and reviewing reports.

The iPhone 17 series was launched in Korea on September 19. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at 1.79 million KRW (about 1,255 USD), while the iPhone 17 Pro Max is priced at 1.99 million KRW (about 1,395 USD) for the base model.
