
Samsung Electronics is expanding its lineup of paper-thin, lightweight digital signage with the Samsung Color E-Paper, accelerating its push into the ultra-low-power, eco-friendly display market. The company’s strategy is to broaden the scope of commercial display applications by introducing a new 13-inch model, about the size of an A4 sheet, in addition to its existing 32-inch model.
On Friday, Samsung announced the global rollout of its 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper, which is comparable in size to A4 paper. This innovative product stands out for its world-first use of plant-based plankton materials, embodying both technological advancement and environmental consciousness.
The new 13-inch model, following last year’s 32-inch version, boasts a 1600×1200 resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Weighing just about 2.0 lb (battery included) and measuring only 0.34 inches thick, it maximizes portability and installation flexibility.
A key feature is its digital ink technology, which enables ‘ultra-low power’ performance by consuming no energy when displaying static images. The product comes with a detachable battery, a placement stand, and a ceiling-mount bracket, allowing for versatile deployment in various commercial settings and potentially replacing traditional paper printouts entirely.
Samsung has pioneered the use of bio-resin, derived from plant-based plankton oil, as a display material. This innovative substance leverages plankton’s carbon dioxide absorption during production, reducing carbon emissions by over 40% compared to conventional petroleum-based plastics. The global certification body UL has verified that more than half of the product’s cover is made of recycled plastics and bio-resin. Additionally, the packaging is 100% paper-based, reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Operational convenience has been significantly enhanced. Samsung’s integrated signage management solution, Samsung VXT, enables real-time device control and content-quality optimization. A dedicated mobile app enables easy management of advertising playlists via smartphone.
Kim Hyung Jae, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and market innovation, noting that it has developed and implemented new materials to minimize environmental impact, setting an industry precedent. They aim to lead in exploring new markets through technological breakthroughs.
Samsung plans to further expand its product range at the upcoming ISE 2026, Europe’s largest display exhibition in Barcelona, Spain, this February. The company will showcase a new 20-inch model, comparable to A3 paper size.
Market research firm Omdia projects that the global signage market will reach 12.7 billion USD by 2029. Samsung currently leads the industry with a 36.2% market share by volume as of the third quarter of 2025. With this new e-paper product, the company aims to maintain its 17-year streak as the world’s top player in the field.
