A recent survey has uncovered that two-thirds of Google’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) Gemini users are migrants who switched from OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Consumer Insight’s Weekly Generative AI Consumer Trends Survey, conducted over four weeks starting in January, revealed that 65% of Gemini users first experienced AI services through ChatGPT.

Only 22% of users have been loyal to Gemini since its inception. This indicates that users who transitioned from ChatGPT to Gemini outnumber native Gemini users by a factor of three.

The survey also found that 90% of current ChatGPT users reported ChatGPT as their first AI experience.

According to the report, these differences in user behavior stem from varying attitudes towards adopting new work tools.

Long-time ChatGPT users cited the variety and sufficiency of free features as their primary reasons for sticking with the platform. In contrast, those who switched to Gemini from ChatGPT emphasized factors tied to work performance, such as user-friendly interface, faster response times, and higher accuracy and reliability of answers.

The study also showed that Gemini users tended to be earlier adopters of AI technology. Before 2023, 24% of Gemini users had already experimented with AI, compared to 19% of ChatGPT users.

On average, Gemini users reported experience with 3.9 different AI services, while ChatGPT users averaged 3.0. Gemini users also employed AI for a wider range of purposes, averaging 2.6 use cases compared to 1.8 for ChatGPT users.

These findings suggest that current Gemini users are more likely to be early adopters who embraced AI technology sooner and have explored a broader range of AI applications.

The survey also revealed differences in quality satisfaction ratings between the core users of both services. Gemini received high marks for quality, while ChatGPT was praised for its pricing structure.

Gemini outperformed in 10 out of 12 evaluation categories, with particularly strong showings in result quality, accuracy, and value for money.

The report concluded that while ChatGPT maintains an advantage as a pioneer in generative AI, Gemini is capitalizing on the halo effect of Google’s well-established business ecosystem.
