The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) is breaking new ground as the first government-funded research institute to launch a Machine Data Platform (KIMM Data Platform). This innovative platform will make the institute’s machine research data publicly available and connect data users with providers.

KIMM officials stated on Wednesday that this platform creates a public data infrastructure, enabling industry professionals and researchers to directly utilize data accumulated from research fields for artificial intelligence (AI) based research and development (R&D). Users can access metadata, generation conditions, and information about data producers, while exploring potential collaboration opportunities.

The platform offers a comprehensive data guidebook, providing detailed explanations of experimental processes and usage methods. It has also begun sharing some raw data suitable for AI training, including bearing deterioration data and indoor air quality measurements.

Physical AI, an emerging technology that learns the physical characteristics of machines and equipment to revolutionize design, control, and fault diagnosis, has become a critical factor in industrial competitiveness. As a result, data acquisition and accessibility are now more crucial than ever.

This data release focuses on eight key research areas, including hydrogen society, AI robotics, and mobility. It offers high applicability in conjunction with AI, digital transformation (DX), virtual engineering platforms, reliability assessment, and nano-convergence technologies.

The KIMM Data Platform research team is planning to develop an automated data pipeline to ensure the continuous production of high-quality data. The platform aims to go beyond mere data disclosure by fostering collaboration between users and providers, thereby promoting joint research and technological cooperation.

On June 25, a data challenge will be held in partnership with the Korean Society for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) at the Westin Chosun in Busan. This event is expected to accelerate innovation in the AI-driven machinery industry.
