Google’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) service, Gemini, will soon allow users to send messages through KakaoTalk.

On Tuesday, Google hosted the Android Show: I/O 2026 Edition, a precursor to its annual developer conference, Google I/O. During this event, the tech giant announced the integration of messenger apps like KakaoTalk with Gemini.

Google introduced an on-device Model Context Protocol (MCP) called App Functions for Android. This feature enables developers to connect AI agents with external apps and data. The company also revealed a partnership with Kakao that will allow users to send KakaoTalk messages or make voice calls (VoiceTalk) using Gemini.

MCP is an open standard that bridges large language models (LLMs) with external data, functioning as a universal interface. It enables AI models to access real-time information and utilize various tools.

Diana Wong, a Google product manager, stated during the event that they’re collaborating with messaging apps like KakaoTalk to enable users to send messages or initiate voice calls through Gemini using App Functions. It’s in the early stages of Application Programming Interface (API) testing before expanding to a broader ecosystem.

Google demonstrated the potential of App Functions by showcasing 25 app use cases, including the ability to share photos between the Samsung Gallery app and Google Messages.

This AI agent-app integration feature will extend beyond smartphones to other Android devices, including smartwatches, cars, smart glasses, and laptops. Users will be able to send KakaoTalk messages through various smart devices using Gemini.

Google aims to transform Android into an intelligent system by implementing the AI agent Gemini Intel Corporationligence across the platform. Gemini Intel Corporationligence is scheduled to debut this summer on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, with plans to roll out to other Android devices such as smartwatches, cars, smart glasses, and laptops by year-end.

In February, Kakao announced its intention to enhance on-device AI services through a strategic partnership with Google.
