Catholic University has announced the establishment of the nation’s first AIoT (AI+IoT) Convergence Space Design Lab, marking a significant step towards cultivating interdisciplinary talent for the smart space design industry on Thursday.

This innovative lab serves as an educational space that seamlessly integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) for smart space design training.

Earlier, the university’s Department of Space Design and Consumer Studies forged partnerships with smart home company Akara Life and IoT interior design specialist UIA Design, signing a memorandum of understanding to foster industry-academia collaboration in AIoT-driven intelligent space design.

The lab will be equipped with Akara Life’s cutting-edge AIoT smart home platform, an array of IoT devices, and an advanced smart lighting system.

Students will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects incorporating smart space technologies, honing their skills in AI and IoT-based smart space design and user-centric space service development.

The facility is also set to become a key hub for regional innovation and digital transformation, serving as a demonstration platform for collaborative projects between local communities, industry, and academia.

Dr. Kim Na-yeon, Chair of the Department of Space Design and Consumer Studies at Catholic University, emphasized that in this era of digital transformation, it’s crucial for the field of space design to embrace a new educational and research paradigm that integrates AI and IoT. This partnership will enables to maintain strong ties with industry leaders and focus on nurturing versatile professionals equipped with both practical skills and the ability to adapt to future industry demands.
