The National Research Foundation of Korea announced on Thursday that a research team led by Professor Yoon-seok Park from Kyung Hee University has developed a groundbreaking soft mechanical Meta surface. This next-generation surface can freely alter its shape and self-restore without damage, utilizing principles similar to those of magnetic levitation trains.

This innovative mechanical Meta surface is a programmable structure that actively modifies its geometric form in response to external stimuli. Its potential applications span various fields, including tactile interfaces, interactive displays, soft robotics, and wearable technology.

The team engineered a dual-layer structure by combining two polymers and uniformly dispersing neodymium magnetic particles. By applying voltage, they can control the height of each pixel within a mere 8 milliseconds, enabling the creation of over 1,030 distinct three-dimensional configurations. The surface’s internal precision motion sensors (IMU) allow for real-time change detection without the need for external cameras.

Moreover, this structure has exhibited remarkable durability, consistently self-restoring to its target shape without structural damage or performance decline, even after 5,000 operational cycles.

Professor Park expressed enthusiasm about the breakthrough, stating that this represents the first soft platform that integrates shape transformation, self-sensing, and visual output. It anticipates its widespread adoption in tactile interfaces, wearable devices, and interactive display technologies.

This research, supported by the Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the National Research Foundation of Korea, was published in the June 26 issue of Science Advances, a prestigious journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
