A research team from Inha University has developed a groundbreaking technology that transforms real-world spaces into captivating cartoon-style three-dimensional (3D) renderings.

Inha University announced on Monday that Professor Kim Jong-hyun from the Department of Design Technology and undergraduate researcher Lee Yeon-jae have successfully created a novel cartoon rendering technique using 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS).

3D Gaussian Splatting is an innovative method that swiftly reconstructs three-dimensional spaces from multi-angle photographs, enabling real-time display. This cutting-edge technology is making waves in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), gaming, and digital twin applications.

Previous techniques often struggled with cartoon-style rendering due to a lack of clear surface or depth information, resulting in unwanted outlines in distant backgrounds and screen instability during viewpoint changes.

The research team tackled this challenge by leveraging information generated during the 3D space reconstruction process, enhancing scene depth without the need for separate, high-precision 3D models.

This ingenious approach sharpens outlines of objects near the camera while minimizing extraneous lines and noise in distant backgrounds. It also significantly reduces screen flickering during perspective shifts, greatly improving video stability.

The potential applications of this technology are vast, as it allows for the creation of cartoon-style content from real spaces without the need for complex 3D modeling. Experts anticipate its widespread adoption in VR, AR, animation, gaming, and digital twin technologies.

Undergraduate student Lee Yeon-jae led the study as first author, with Professor Kim Jong-hyun serving as corresponding author. Their groundbreaking findings have been published in the prestigious international journal IEEE Access.
