Samsung Display is developing innovative low-power organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology for laptops.

Unlike traditional low-power products that applied energy-saving technology at the panel level, this new approach focuses on the driving components, such as drive integrated circuits (ICs) and chips.

The company aims to aggressively target the premium organic light emitting diode (OLED) laptop market by expanding the supply of these power-efficient devices.

New technology incorporates power-saving features in both panel and driving components, significantly extending battery life

Industry sources revealed on August 29 that Samsung Display is currently working on low-power OLED technology tailored for laptops.

Laptop monitors consist of two main parts: the display unit, which shows the screen, and the driving unit, which controls and operates it.

Previously, low-energy products were developed with power-saving technology applied at the panel level, based on OLED characteristics.

Samsung Display’s new technology applies energy-saving measures not only to the display panel but also to the driving unit, substantially reducing overall power consumption. By implementing low-power technology in both areas, the company can significantly decrease energy use, boost efficiency, and extend battery life.

Given that efficient power consumption is crucial for laptops, this technology is particularly well-suited for these devices. Longer battery life enhances portability, offering greater convenience to laptop users.

The efficiency gains are even more pronounced when compared to existing laptops with liquid crystal displays (LCDs). OLEDs already offer better battery-saving effects than LCDs, and by optimizing the driving unit as well, Samsung can further enhance power efficiency.

Samsung Display has recently filed for the trademark LP OLED related to this technology.

Expanding OLED Laptop Supply: Targeting Premium Market With Cutting-Edge Technology
Samsung Display is strategically positioning itself to capture the premium laptop market with its advanced OLED technology. The display industry has been expanding OLED applications beyond smartphones to include tablets and laptops.

Following Apple’s introduction of the first OLED panel in the iPad Pro in 2024, global personal computer (PC) manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo are also broadening their OLED laptop product lines.

According to Omdia, the market for OLEDs in laptops and tablets is projected to surge from approximately 4.1 billion USD last year to 13.8 billion USD by 2030, more than tripling in size.

To meet the growing demand for information technology (IT) OLEDs, Samsung Display has ramped up its production capacity. The company’s 8.6-generation IT OLED production line at the Asan campus began mass production this year. This facility can produce panels for medium and large IT products, such as laptops and tablets, using larger substrates than those used for existing smartphone OLEDs.

Moreover, this innovative technology will help Samsung fend off fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers, who are aggressively pushing low-cost OLED products.

The Korea Display Industry Association reports that South Korea’s global OLED market share, which remained above 80% until 2021, is expected to drop significantly to the 60% range starting in 2024.

An industry insider noted that as OLED adoption expands to products like laptops, competition in investment and technology within the global display industry will intensify. In this climate of increasing market competition, domestic display companies like Samsung Display are poised to maintain their edge through differentiated technology.
