Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest Cinema LED screen, Onyx (also known as ICD), at CinemaCon 2025, the world’s largest film industry expo, held in Las Vegas from Monday to Thursday.
Introduced by Samsung in 2017, Onyx is the world’s first dedicated cinema LED screen. It was the first movie screen to receive the Digital Cinema Certificate from Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) for image quality, sound performance, and content security features.
At CinemaCon 2025, Samsung presented its vision for the future of cinema, showcasing Onyx with its state-of-the-art display technology alongside innovative products like Samsung’s Color E-Paper.
The Cinema LED Onyx has seen significant advancements in image quality, screen scalability, and compatibility with various media servers. The new model boasts 4K resolution (4096×2160), supports up to 4K at a 120Hz frame rate, offers 100% accurate colors within the DCI-P3 color space, and delivers stunning contrast ratios with deep, rich blacks.
The screen is available in four standard widths: 5 meters, 10 meters, 14 meters, and 20 meters.
Beyond these standard sizes, Samsung offers a scaling option for larger installations, allowing theaters to tailor screen dimensions to their specific venue requirements.
The scaling feature maintains the film’s standard aspect ratio while maximizing screen size. Onyx also incorporates High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, achieving brightness levels up to 300 nits – approximately six times brighter than conventional projectors – resulting in enhanced contrast and realistic images.

The Onyx screen’s versatility allows it to display various content such as concerts and sporting events, even in an environment with high illuminance. It also provides an immersive 3D viewing experience.
Samsung offers a standard three-year warranty, extendable up to ten years. The company also provides an “Automatic Calibration Solution” to ensure consistent color across all modules during installation and maintenance.
Onyx is compatible with various media servers, including Dolby and GDC IMB. It supports multiple cinema audio systems such as Harman’s JBL Surround Technology, Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, and QSC.
In October last year, Samsung installed six Onyx screens at the Pathé Palace, a 150-year-old historic Parisian opera house renovated into a modern cinema.
At the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) exhibition in February, Samsung’s cinema display technology received an award in the technology commercialization category, recognizing its excellence in the field.
Furthermore, Pixar Animation Studios has partnered with Samsung to optimize popular films like Elemental and Inside Out 2, converting them into 4K HDR content exclusive for the Onyx screen.
