According to China Daily, on May 8th, Tesla, an American company pursuing Fully Self-Driving (FSD) technology, plans to test its robotaxis in China. China is known for its openness to new technologies, contrasting with the heavily regulated U.S.

Quoting sources, the outlet reported that Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, proposed testing the FSD feature in China during his recent visit, and the Chinese government partially approved the plan. According to the sources, Chinese officials told Musk, “China welcomes Tesla to test robotaxis in China,” and “We hope it will set a good precedent.”

Experts agree that China is sending a clear signal of its openness to multinational companies testing advanced technologies within its borders, despite rising protectionism in the U.S., which includes the ban on TikTok.

Musk recently announced on his X (formerly Twitter) that he would unveil the ambitious robotaxi plan on August 8th. However, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating numerous accidents that have occurred while Tesla’s Autopilot driver-assist system was engaged, highlighting the heavy regulations in the U.S.

In contrast, China has been proactive with new technologies, granting Tesla a preliminary license for FSD. Tesla plans to collaborate with China’s Baidu to proceed with the project.
