North Korea has enacted two new laws: the Farm Settlement Distribution Law, which aims to reinforce the material and technological foundations of farms, and the Consumer Protection Law, designed to safeguard consumer rights.

On August 30, the official newspaper of the Workers’ Party, Rodong Sinmun, reported that a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea took place. The exact date of this meeting was not specified.

According to the newspaper, the committee discussed and reviewed the adoption of the Farm Settlement Distribution Law and the Consumer Protection Law during this meeting, ultimately approving both decrees.

Regarding the Farm Settlement Distribution Law, the newspaper stated that its mission is to reinforce the material and technological foundations of farms through an effective evaluation of work efforts and corresponding settlement distribution. This likely refers to a system that quantifies workers’ contributions to ensure a fair distribution based on their performance.

The newspaper also reported that the Consumer Protection Law aims to establish systems and order in the provision of goods and services to protect consumers’ legitimate rights and interests, ultimately contributing to an improved quality of life for the people.

Previously, North Korea did not have a dedicated consumer protection law; instead, related issues were addressed through various laws on quality control, pricing, and commerce. The adoption of this new Consumer Protection Law appears to be a concentrated effort to address consumer rights more comprehensively.
