Satellite imagery has uncovered North Korea’s preparations for a military parade ahead of the 9th Workers’ Party Congress, anticipated in early 2024.

NK News reported on Wednesday that analysis of commercial satellite images from Planet Labs revealed a significant gathering of military trucks at Pyongyang’s Mirim Airport training ground.

These vehicles first appeared between November 4-5, with clear images from November 11 showing hundreds of trucks occupying an open area within the facility.

Mirim Airport has a history of hosting extended training sessions for large-scale troop and vehicle formations.

Experts suggest this current mobilization is likely a preliminary step to transport troops from outlying regions to Pyongyang and support training for the upcoming parade.

A comparable buildup was observed five years ago when North Korea assembled transport vehicles at Mirim Airport in preparation for the 8th Party Congress parade in late 2020.

However, NK News highlighted that the current preparations are occurring earlier than those for the previous congress.

This timing could indicate plans for a larger parade or the potential unveiling of new strategic weapons during the congress. Given the limited display of new armaments in October’s parade, speculation is mounting that Pyongyang might showcase advanced nuclear missiles or delivery systems.

On November 4, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reported indications that North Korea is planning to hold a military parade in conjunction with the party congress early next year.
