The assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in airstrikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel has thrown the Middle East into chaos. Experts suggest that Iran might retaliate by closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for global oil shipments. This threat has triggered a spike in international oil prices and increased demand for safe-haven assets like gold and the U.S. dollar. Consequently, the South Korean economy faces growing uncertainty amidst these geopolitical tensions.

According to international media reports on Monday, global oil prices have been extremely volatile since the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran began. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has hinted at potentially blocking the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices to surge dramatically. However, stock market losses have been relatively contained, suggesting that investors haven’t yet fully factored in the possibility of a full-scale conflict.
In New York, Nasdaq futures initially plummeted 1.5% at the opening bell but later recovered, reducing losses to 0.6%. Japan’s Nikkei index opened down more than 2% before paring losses to just over 1%. The U.S. dollar strengthened by 0.3%, while gold prices rallied 2%.

Financial analysts caution that if political instability in Iran persists and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz become a reality, we could witness simultaneous volatility in oil prices, exchange rates, and stock markets worldwide.
