U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Park Steel met with First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Yoon-joo to discuss strengthening trilateral cooperation between the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, as well as enhancing the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
Ambassador Steel shared on her X account (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that she had a productive discussion with Vice Minister Park following her meeting with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.
She elaborated that it exchanged views on deepening cooperation among the U.S., South Korea, and Japan based on recent progress, promoting shared economic prosperity, and further bolstering the robust U.S.-South Korea alliance.
Vice Minister Park leads the South Korean delegation in U.S.-South Korea security consultations, which cover topics such as the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines and securing rights for uranium enrichment and reprocessing.
Consequently, there is significant interest in whether this meeting included discussions on bilateral security issues and the follow-up schedule for U.S.-South Korea security consultations. However, neither Ambassador Steel nor the Foreign Ministry disclosed specific details about these potential discussions.
Previously, on August 4, Ambassador Steel submitted a copy of her credentials to the Foreign Ministry and met with Minister Cho to discuss the U.S.-South Korea alliance and key bilateral issues.
