The Houston Astros, current leaders of the American League West in Major League Baseball (MLB), have severed ties with General Manager Dana Brown.
The Astros organization announced on Tuesday that they had reached a mutual agreement to part ways with Brown.
Brown, who took on the role of Houston’s General Manager (GM) in January 2023, will depart before completing the final year of his contract.
MLB.com reported that this decision came on the heels of Houston’s disappointing 3-6 record in a nine-game stretch against division rivals Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and Oakland Athletics. This poor performance dropped the team’s winning percentage below .500, pointing to recent struggles as the catalyst for Brown’s dismissal.
Despite holding the division lead, the Astros’ recent slump has allowed the Texas Rangers to pull even at the top. Last season, Houston missed the postseason for the first time since 2016, ending their streak of October baseball appearances.
The club stated that Brown’s duties will be distributed among Vice Presidents Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, as well as Senior Advisor Jeff Bagwell. Owner Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations during the transition period.
In his farewell statement, Brown expressed gratitude, saying that the Houston organization and fans welcomed him and his family with open arms. He’s thankful to have called Houston home for the past four years. He wishes the organization continued success and look forward to the next chapter of his career after more than 36 years in professional baseball.
