Cheong In Kyo, Chief Trade Negotiator of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, met with Former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Kathleen Stephens and Korea Society President Thomas Byrne on June 19. They discussed the current state of the U.S.-Korea alliance, ways to deepen cooperation between the U.S. and Korea, the trend of the U.S. presidential election, and other major trade issues with the U.S.

The Korea Society is a non-profit organization established in 1957 to promote U.S.-Korea relations. Stephens and the delegation assessed that Americans’ interest in Korea has greatly increased due to its elevated international status and the influence of the Korean wave.

They also announced plans to improve cultural understanding and reduce the psychological distance between the two countries. This included state visits to the U.S. and U.S.-Korea-Japan summit meetings as the exchange between the two countries is more active than ever.

Cheong said, “The U.S.-Korea alliance is being strengthened from a security alliance to a cutting-edge industry and supply chain alliance,” adding, “In the current uncertain trade environment, we need the continuous interest and support of Korea Society so that our companies can build a mutually beneficial industrial ecosystem through stable investment in the U.S.”
