In the past three years, minors have made up 60% of victims of deepfake sexual crimes.

Data from the Korean National Police Agency, provided to Rep. Yang Bum Nam of the Democratic Party, reveals that there were a total of 496 deepfake sexual crimes reported over the past three years. The number of cases increased from 156 in 2021 to 180 in 2023.

Among the 527 total victims, teenagers accounted for a significant portion—315 individuals, or 59.8%. The number of teenage victims has been rising, with figures increasing from 53 in 2021 to 81 in 2022, jumping to 181 in 2023. This represents a dramatic 241.5% rise in teenage victims compared to 2021.

As of July this year, there have been 297 reported deepfake sexual crimes, with 147 cases leading to arrests and 146 individuals apprehended.

Yang emphasized, “Given that the majority of deepfake victims are teenagers, we need to implement measures to address this issue urgently.”
