North Korea has seized upon the recent fighter jet mishap in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, to escalate its criticism of U.S.-led joint military exercises. Pyongyang is leveraging the incident to denounce the annual South Korea-U.S. joint drill, Freedom Shield (FS), labeling it as dangerously provocative and unjustifiable.

North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published a commentary via the Korean Central News Agency titled “Ominous Signs of Perilous U.S.-ROK Joint Military Exercises.” While acknowledging that such accidents are not uncommon in military operations, the commentary highlighted the significance of the incident’s timing—it occurred near North Korea’s southern border just days before large-scale joint exercises simulating an all-out war against the DPRK.

Citing foreign media reports, the piece speculated on the potential consequences had the bombs landed slightly farther north and crossed into North Korean territory, portraying the incident as a direct threat to its regime.

The article described the Korean Peninsula as “the world’s most dangerous nuclear flashpoint” and warned that even a minor miscalculation could trigger a broader military conflict. It accused Washington and Seoul of conducting “malicious war rehearsals” that heighten regional tensions.

Pyongyang further rejected assertions that these military drills maintain regional stability. Instead, it characterized them as reckless provocations that could lead to “the world’s first nuclear war.”

The article urged the United States and South Korea to take the incident as a severe warning and demanded an immediate halt to what it called “war demonstrations.”

The commentary mocked Seoul and Washington’s decision to exclude live-fire drills from future exercises and derided them as ” silent drills.”

The piece concluded with a stark warning: North Korea is closely monitoring military movements in the region and stands ready to respond “with ruthless force, without warning,” if necessary.

The Pocheon incident occurred on March 6 at approximately 10:04 a.m. KST. During a live-fire exercise, two KF-16 fighter jets accidentally released eight Mk-82 bombs roughly 5.6 to 6.2 miles ( approximately 9 to 10 km) south of their target range. The bombs struck multiple locations, including an army training ground, a church, farmland, and a roadway, all of which sustained damage as the ordnance detonated on impact.

North Korean state media first reported on the incident on March 8, describing it as having caused “a great commotion” in what it referred to as “puppet South Korea.”
