As resident doctors continue to protest against the government’s policy to increase the number of medical schools, a case of a patient dying due to delayed transportation has been confirmed in Daejeon.
According to the Daejeon Fire Department on the 26th, an 80-year-old woman who collapsed due to cardiac arrest at noon on the 23rd was transferred to a university hospital in Daejeon within 53 minutes but was pronounced dead about 10 minutes after arrival.
It was reported that the patient’s hospital transfer was delayed due to “unable to treat” notifications from seven hospitals, which were caused by the absence of medical staff after the ambulance was dispatched.
The number of delayed ambulance transfers from the first day of the protest on the 20th until 6 a.m. on this day increased to 23 cases. Due to the lack of medical staff, cases seem to be rapidly increasing, from five in four days.
A foreign woman in her 30s hoped for emergency treatment due to abdominal pain and hematochezia symptoms around 4 a.m. on the 25th. However, she could not be admitted to 14 hospitals due to the absence of a specialist and the inability to accept patients other than those with existing appointments. It took her three hours before she was finally transferred to a university hospital in Daejeon.
On the first day of the protest, five transfer delays occurred in Chungnam, but further disruptions were not reported.
