North Korea has been sending trash balloons to South Korea since the end of May. They announced on June 2 that they would stop additional dispersals.

Kim Kang Il, Deputy Minister of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, said in a statement released through the Korean Central News Agency, “We’ve given the South a taste of how disgusting and labor-intensive it is to clean up scattered litter.”

Kim added, “We will temporarily halt scattering garbage across the border. This is because our actions are strictly retaliatory.”

Kim emphasized, “As per our warning, if the South resumes anti-Republic leaflet dispersals, depending on the quantity and frequency discovered, we will respond by concentrating on dispersing a hundred times the amount of paper and garbage.”

North Korea announced a countermeasure to the South’s leaflet dispersals on May 26. From the night of May 28 to 29, it was confirmed that they sent about 260 trash balloons to the South, followed by an additional 600 trash balloons from the evening of June 1 to 3.
