North Korea emphasized the need for damage control measures as more rain than expected fell in the southern region yesterday.
North Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that heavy rain and flood warnings were issued for Kaesong City, and a moderate warning was issued in some areas of South Hwanghae Province and South Gangwon Province.
The newspaper recommended that all sectors of the economy, including agriculture, implement comprehensive measures to mitigate the effects of heavy rain and flooding. It advised managing crops based on weather conditions and ensuring that production continues without disruption.
According to the State Hydro-Meteorological Administration, North Korea’s national weather service, heavy rainfall was recorded until 8 p.m. the previous day, with 18.2 inches in Kaesong City, 13.8 inches in Gaepung County, 7.6 inches in Yeonan County, and 6.3 inches in Baecheon County. A significant amount of rain was observed in some areas of the South and North Hwanghae Provinces.
The newspaper forecasted that heavy rain will persist in Kaesong City, southern Hwanghae Province, and south Kangwon Province due to a monsoon front and low-pressure trough. It also predicted strong winds, around 10m/s (22.4 mph), in various southern areas of the central region.
The forecast indicated heavy rain will fall in most areas, including the west coast, due to the influence of the monsoon front.
The newspaper highlighted the damage control measures in the agriculture, power industry, and railway sectors in an article titled “Thoroughly Prepared for Unexpected Situations.” It is reported that executives from the Provincial Party Committee lead the efforts on-site.
North Korea suffers substantial material and human damage from natural disasters such as heavy monsoon rains, floods, and typhoons every year. They are putting all their efforts into prevention projects and are heightening their alertness in all sectors.
