EtcIncheon Ministry on High Alert After Bomb Threat Demands 3 Million Yen Ransom

Authorities have initiated an investigation after a threatening letter was received by an agency under the Ministry of Environment in Incheon. The letter claimed explosives would be detonated unless a ransom was paid.

The Incheon Seobu Police Station reported that at around 11 a.m. today, the National Environmental Human Resources Development Institute in Oryu-dong received a fax written in English and Japanese. The fax demanded a transfer of 3 million yen (approximately $20,000) to a specific account and threatened to detonate explosives in the building if the demand was not met.

In response, police evacuated about 40 employees from the institute and deployed a special police unit and a bomb disposal team to conduct a thorough search of the premises.

After searching the interior and exterior of the building for approximately two hours until about 1:20 p.m., no suspicious explosives were found.

A police official stated, “We are conducting preliminary inquiries into the sender’s information contained in the fax.”
