On Wednesday, the Democratic Party of Korea sharply criticized President Yoon Suk Yeol’s remarks during the impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court, accusing him of continuing to spread falsehoods.

Jeon Hyun Hee, a senior member of the Democratic Party, voiced her concerns during a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly that morning. She pointed to an absurd claim made during the trial that martial law forces had been deployed to defend the National Assembly. Jeon questioned, “If the martial law forces were there to defend, does that mean the public attacked the National Assembly?”

Jeon went further, criticizing Yoon for his continued denial of insurrection charges and calling his defense a string of blatant lies. She added that his legal maneuvers, such as attempting to cancel an arrest, only mocked the judiciary. “Now, he’s accusing the people who stopped a coup of being rioters,” she said. Yoon, a far-right leader, is using deceit to rally his extremist supporters, intimidate the judiciary, and undermine the impeachment process—all to stage a political comeback.”

Jeon also addressed the ruling People Power Party, urging its members to abandon their ties with far-right groups and return to the people. The People Power Party belongs not in prison or at extremist rallies but by the side of the people,” she said. I hope, even now, they will join efforts to restore democracy, uphold constitutional order, and help overcome this crisis.”

Han Jun Ho, another senior member, criticized Yoon’s defense in the trial. “Yesterday, his only response was that discussing whether orders were given or received when nothing happened was like chasing the moon’s reflection on a lake,” Han said. “This is like banging the gong while asleep—a nonsensical remark.”

Han also emphasized the arrogance of declaring martial law, stating, “The public clearly remembers what happened on the night of December 3 when martial law was declared. If Yoon lies about it and says nothing happened, he deserves to face the consequences.”

Kim Byung Ju, another senior member, also weighed in, offering a pointed counter to Yoon’s claim. “In my view, it’s not the reflection of the moon on the lake but rather the moonlight of truth shining on the lake,” he said. Kim continued, “Even during yesterday’s trial, Yoon’s parade of lies continued. But no matter how much he tries, he can’t hide the truth with his words.”
