Samsung Display is set to unveil a next-generation smartphone OLED that delivers 1.5 times brighter screens with the same power consumption and is about 20% thinner than existing OLEDs.

The company announced on Thursday that it will showcase its next-generation display at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, which opens on March 3.

This innovative product was developed using OCF (On-Cell Film) technology, a “non-polarizer display.”

Traditionally, polarizers, which are opaque plastic sheets, have been used to prevent displays made of metal and glass from reflecting external light like mirrors and reducing visibility. However, these polarizers had the drawback of decreasing luminous efficiency. To overcome this limitation, Samsung Display has removed the polarizer and incorporated film and special materials to embed reflective reduction functions directly into the panel using OCF technology.

The ultra-high-brightness OLED that Samsung Display will exhibit has a maximum brightness of 5,000 nits. Even in everyday usage scenarios, such as movie watching, it maintains an impressive brightness of over 3,000 nits. Compared to recently released OLEDs for premium smartphones, this new display offers about 1.5 times the brightness while consuming the same amount of power.

The removal of the polarizer has also resulted in a thinner panel. The OCF-applied panel is approximately 20% thinner than conventional OLED panels with polarizers. This reduction in thickness facilitates easier design optimization for improved durability and visibility.

Notably, the panel’s reduced rebound strength makes it particularly suitable for implementing various form factors and designs, including slidable and rollable displays. At the upcoming MWC 2025, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the thinness of the OCF-applied panels firsthand in a dedicated demonstration area.
