The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea announced that it has completed performance upgrades to the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter simulator currently used by the ROK Army as part of its existing force capability maximization project.

The helicopter simulator recreates actual operating conditions using three-dimensional imagery, allowing for simulated flight training. It provides pilots with an experience resembling actual flight, even on the ground. Pilots can develop their skills by facing tactical scenarios, such as aerial combat with enemy aircraft, and emergencies, like severe weather or aircraft malfunctions.

The original UH-60 simulators, introduced in 2000 and 2008, enhanced pilots’ mission capabilities. However, they faced challenges due to aging, including deteriorating visual system performance, obsolescence of key components, and rising software maintenance costs.

DAPA overhauled the entire visual generation system to address these issues, replacing beam projectors, monitors, and other components. This upgrade significantly improved image quality, resolution, and depth perception. Additionally, DAPA upgraded the visual computers and operational servers, incorporating new terrain data comparable to satellite images and reducing screen lag and startup times.

DAPA officials stated that integrating cutting-edge components has improved parts supply and domestic maintenance, leading to more stable operations and reduced maintenance costs.

Park Jeong Eun, Director of DAPA’s Base Force Support Division, expressed optimism about the upgrades, saying, “The enhanced UH-60 helicopter simulator will enable safer and more realistic flight training, significantly boosting our pilots’ proficiency.” She added, “Going forward, we’ll continue to swiftly address the military’s performance improvement requests through our existing force capability maximization project, ensuring high satisfaction levels among our military.”
