A tech news outlet Engadget reported on Monday that Meta announced it will introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-powered age detection technology to bolster protections for young users across its platforms.

The tech giant plans to expand its use of AI to identify teenage users on Instagram, Facebook, and other Meta-owned platforms. In certain instances, the system will automatically adjust account settings. This AI-driven approach aims to detect when users input false birth dates, automatically converting their accounts to teen status, thereby strengthening safeguards for adolescent users on the platform.

Meta began implementing AI-based age detection systems last year. Teen accounts on Meta platforms are subject to more stringent privacy settings and parental controls. These accounts are set to private by default and restrict messaging with unknown users. According to Meta, over 54 million teenagers currently use these protected accounts, with 97% of users aged 13 to 15 maintaining this status. The company also reported positive feedback from parents, with more than 90% believing that these specialized accounts enhance their children’s online safety.

In addition to these measures, Meta is introducing further protections for young users. On Instagram, the company will send notifications to parents emphasizing the importance of accurately entering their children’s ages and encouraging the use of teen accounts. Meta is also backing federal legislation that would require app stores to obtain parental consent when users under 16 download apps, as part of a broader initiative to improve age-appropriate online experiences.
