Meta is testing a new feature that transforms Instagram feeds into immersive 3D photos on its Quest virtual reality (VR) headset. According to The Verge, Meta announced this development in a blog post on May 22. The company explained that its cutting-edge AI view synthesis algorithm enables users to convert standard Instagram photos into three-dimensional images at the pixel level without the need for specialized 3D cameras.

Meta further elaborated that, when viewed through Quest, even flat, two-dimensional photos that weren’t initially captured in 3D will be automatically converted into an immersive format, adding depth to the images.

While the feature is set to begin trials this week, it won’t be immediately available to all Quest users. This development follows Meta’s introduction of 3D photo functionality on Facebook in 2018. The Instagram 3D photo feature has been developed along similar lines.

The 3D photo capability is part of the broader Quest v77 update, which brings several new features to the platform. One notable addition is the Navigator, a new centralized interface for managing games, apps, friends, notifications, and key system settings. Users can access the Navigator by pressing the Meta or Oculus button on the right controller. It allows quick access to recent apps and the option to pin up to 10 items for easy reach.

The v77 update also introduces Bluetooth low-energy audio devices support, a window selection feature that follows users as they move, and the new Horizon for PC app. This app integrates Quest link, casting, and remote desktop functionalities, streamlining the user experience across devices.
