Chinese smartphone maker Vivo is redefining mobile photography with the introduction of a 2.35x telephoto lens for its X200 Ultra. According to The Verge, the new lens, when paired with the phone’s built-in 3.7x telephoto module, achieves an impressive 8.7x optical zoom, equivalent to a 200mm focal length.

The X200 Ultra already delivers strong camera performance, but this new lens unlocks even greater potential. It produces images with natural color and depth in a wide range of lighting conditions, from bright daylight to concert spotlights. The system is especially effective for video, offering excellent stabilization. However, performance declines in very low-light settings, and excessive digital zoom may introduce visible artifacts due to post-processing.

While the lens attachment adds considerable weight, Vivo has partnered with PGYTech to develop a camera kit that enables more stable shooting. The kit includes the lens, a dedicated grip, a filter mount, and both wrist and shoulder straps. However, some users have reported early durability issues—cracks in the phone case after just a few weeks—and occasional sticking of the quick-release button for the lens.

Though it doesn’t quite reach DSLR image quality, the system delivers the most advanced telephoto capability currently available in a smartphone. For photography enthusiasts and professionals seeking powerful zoom features without the bulk of traditional equipment, Vivo’s latest innovation provides a compelling and portable solution.
