On Thursday, Samsung Electronics highlighted the cutting-edge sensor technologies featured in its Galaxy Watch 8 series, including groundbreaking carotenoid measurement and enhanced electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring capabilities. Choi Jong-min, Senior Vice President of the Hardware Development Group in Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) Division, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation during a press briefing.

Choi explained that at Samsung Electronics, they’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with their Galaxy Watch sensors. He added that by making them smaller and more precise, they’re enabling a new level of accuracy in health monitoring.

This year’s Galaxy Watch 8 is all about empowering users to proactively take charge of their health.

One standout feature is the sleep time guidance, which leverages the scientifically backed Two-Process sleep model. After just three nights of wear, the watch analyzes your body clock and fatigue levels to suggest your ideal bedtime, helping you establish healthier sleep patterns.

This game-changing feature was developed in collaboration with researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and underwent clinical validation at Samsung Seoul Hospital.

But that’s not all – the Galaxy Watch 8 series also introduces a world-first: the ability to measure your body’s carotenoid levels in just five seconds using its bioactive sensor.

Why does this matter? Skin carotenoids serve as a key indicator of fruit and vegetable intake, offering valuable insights into how your diet, sun exposure, alcohol consumption, and stress levels are impacting your overall health. This data could prove crucial in the prevention of cancer and various chronic diseases.

Choi noted that this kind of real-time feedback is incredibly powerful. He emphasized that it shows users exactly how their lifestyle choices are affecting their bodies, motivating them to make healthier decisions every day.

The Galaxy Watch 8 series doesn’t stop there – it also raises the bar for heart health monitoring.

The new vascular stress feature assesses your cardiovascular health by measuring photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals during sleep. This provides a comprehensive look at your blood flow and vascular stiffness, tracking changes over time to give you a clear picture of your heart health trajectory.

Perhaps most impressively, the watch’s enhanced electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring can now detect ectopic heartbeats – irregular rhythms that often go unnoticed during routine check-ups.

Choi explained that with the advanced algorithms, the Galaxy Watch 8 series can now calculate the frequency of these ectopic beats. He noted that it’s like having a mini cardiac lab on your wrist, providing insights that were once only available in a doctor’s office.

Choi wrapped up by emphasizing Samsung Electronics’ commitment to preventative health care. He said that their goal is to empower users to form healthy habits and catch potential issues early.

He continued by saying that at Samsung Electronics, they’re not just following trends in healthcare tech – it’s setting them. He stated that they’re dedicated to providing experiences that truly enhance how people manage their health and well-being.
