The Russian Embassy in North Korea announced on Monday that Alexander Matsegora, the Russian ambassador to North Korea, has passed away.

In a statement released via its Telegram account, the embassy reported that on December 6, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) died at the age of 71. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its deep condolences.

The embassy added that the bright memory of this outstanding Russian diplomat and patriot, who made significant contributions to forming and deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea, will forever remain in the hearts. They also extended heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The embassy did not disclose the exact cause of Matsegora’s death.

Matsegora had served as the Russian ambassador to North Korea since 2014 and was considered a veteran diplomat in North Korean affairs. Born in 1955, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and held various positions within the Russian Foreign Ministry, including Deputy Director of the First Asian Department.
