The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Wednesday that Senior Researcher Son Seok-ho has become the first Korean to receive the prestigious CNCF Community Awards 2025, bestowed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), a global open-source organization.

This accolade is considered the highest honor in the global open-source domain, recognizing exceptional contributors from a pool of approximately 270,000 cloud-native open-source community members worldwide. The award celebrates outstanding achievements across the ecosystem, including technological advancements, documentation efforts, and community leadership.

Son was honored in the Lorem Ipsum category for his sustained and impactful open-source contributions to numerous cloud-native projects under CNCF, including Kubernetes. His work has significantly bolstered the community’s growth and stability.

CNCF has elevated the importance of the former Best Documentation Contributor Award by rebranding it as Lorem Ipsum since last year.

This recognition follows Son’s 2022 Kubernetes Contributor Awards win and represents CNCF’s formal acknowledgment of ETRI’s and South Korea’s substantial contributions to the cloud-native ecosystem.

Son expressed hope that this achievement would inspire other talented professionals in South Korea to engage more actively with the global open-source community.

In light of this award, ETRI plans to reframe its approach to open source, viewing it not merely as a tool but as a crucial strategic asset that underpins national technological competitiveness and sovereignty. The institute aims to intensify its research, development, and international collaborative efforts in this field.
