Josh Hoey (USA) has shattered the men’s indoor 800m world record, breaking a 29-year-old mark.

Hoey clinched victory in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix men’s 800m in Boston on Sunday, clocking an impressive time of 1 minute 42.50 seconds.

His performance eclipsed the previous record of 1:42.67 set by Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer in March 1997, slicing 0.17 seconds off the long-standing time.

This achievement comes on the heels of Hoey’s stellar performance at last year’s World Indoor Championships, where he posted the second-fastest time in the event’s history at 1:43.24. Now, he’s etched his name in the record books with this historic run.

For context, the outdoor world record in this event stands at 1:40.91, set by Kenya’s David Rudisha in August 2012.

In another track action, American distance runner Hobbs Kessler made headlines in the men’s 2000m. Kessler stopped the clock at 4:48.79, obliterating the previous world record of 4:49.99 set by Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele in 2007 by over a second.
