How the Latest ICE Shooting Could Lead to a U.S. Government Shutdown: What Asian Investors Need to Know

PoliticsHow the Latest ICE Shooting Could Lead to a U.S. Government Shutdown: What Asian Investors Need to Know

A civilian fatality resulting from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) gunfire in Minnesota has sparked criticism of ICE’s aggressive enforcement tactics, even within the Republican Party. In response, Democrats have hardened their stance against passing the spending bill package, significantly increasing the risk of a federal government shutdown by month’s end.

This political turmoil is sending shockwaves through U.S. financial markets. Cryptocurrencies and stock index futures are experiencing widespread declines.

As of 11:40 a.m. on Monday, Bitcoin has dipped 1.64% to 87,570 USD, according to the global cryptocurrency tracking platform CoinMarketCap.

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, is trading at 2,867 USD, down 2.81%.

Binance Coin, ranked fourth in market cap, has fallen 1.27% to 871 USD, while Ripple, the fifth-largest cryptocurrency, has dropped 1.41% to 1.87 USD.

Concurrently, index futures are also declining, with Dow futures down 0.24%, S&P 500 futures down 0.25%, and Nasdaq futures down 0.42%.

This broad decline in index futures has triggered a downturn in most major Asian markets. Japan’s Nikkei has fallen by 1.92%, and South Korea’s KOSPI is down 0.49%.

On January 24, Alex Jeffrey Preti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit (ICU) nurse at a veterans hospital in Minneapolis, was fatally shot by federal agents while participating in a protest against the federal government’s intensified immigration enforcement.

This tragedy occurred just 17 days after 30-year-old Renee Nicole Good was killed by ICE gunfire, fueling nationwide outrage over the excessive use of force in immigration enforcement.

Democrats are framing the Donald Trump administration’s immigration enforcement as an abuse of power, calling for reforms in enforcement methods and positioning this issue as a central campaign topic. As a result, immigration policy is expected to be a pivotal issue in the upcoming November midterm elections.

Furthermore, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced that Democrats will oppose any government spending bills that include funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

Congress faces a deadline of January 31 to pass the government budget, or risk triggering a partial government shutdown. This looming deadline is particularly unsettling for financial markets.

U.S. media outlets report that even some Republican lawmakers are now voicing concerns about current immigration enforcement practices.
