Hyundai Motor has achieved a significant milestone in the U.S., with its eco-friendly vehicle sales surpassing the 1 million unit mark. This accomplishment comes about 15 years after the automaker began selling hybrid vehicles in the country.

According to Hyundai’s announcement on Wednesday, the company has sold a total of 1,014,943 eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. market since launching the Sonata hybrid in 2011 through January of this year.

The sales breakdown by vehicle type shows: △759,359 hybrids, △253,728 electric vehicles, and △1,856 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Notably, hybrid models accounted for 75% of total eco-friendly vehicle sales, driving the overall green vehicle sales performance.

Annual eco-friendly vehicle sales started at 10,368 units in 2011 and hovered around 20,000 units per year until 2020.

Since then, sales have seen a sharp uptick: △75,009 units in 2021, △98,443 units in 2022, △159,549 units in 2023, and △204,115 units in 2024, demonstrating rapid growth over the past five years.

Last year, Hyundai’s eco-friendly vehicle sales hit a record high of 259,419 units, representing 26.4% of the automaker’s total U.S. sales.

This momentum is continuing into the current year. In January, eco-friendly vehicle sales reached 17,408 units, marking a more than 30% increase compared to the same month last year and setting a new January sales record.

The Tucson hybrid has emerged as Hyundai’s best-selling eco-friendly model in the U.S. market. Since its introduction in 2021, the Tucson hybrid has sold 233,793 units as of January this year.

Following the Tucson hybrid, other top-selling models include: △205,420 units of the Sonata hybrid, △150,618 units of the Ioniq 5, △138,627 units of the Santa Fe hybrid, and △91,888 units of the Elantra hybrid.
