Michael DeSombre, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, is scheduled to visit the memorial for fallen U.S. service members in Korea on March 13. DeSombre will arrive in South Korea on March 11.

The Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation reports that DeSombre will lay a wreath at the memorial, located within the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul’s Yongsan district, on the morning of March 13.

The memorial honors U.S. service members who have died since the signing of the Korean War Armistice in 1953. It was established in February 2023 through a collaborative effort between the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation, the Korean War Veterans Association, and the War Memorial of Korea.

According to the foundation, 103 U.S. service members lost their lives due to North Korean military provocations and during missions between 1955 and 1994.

During his visit, which concludes on March 15, DeSombre will meet with key South Korean officials, including Jeong Yeon-du, the chief nuclear negotiator from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Deputy Minister Jung Eun-hye and Economic Diplomacy Coordinator Park Jong-han. These meetings will focus on discussing current issues related to U.S.-South Korea relations and North Korea policy.
