The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour pro Trey Mullinax has been handed a six-month suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
The PGA Tour announced on Thursday that Mullinax failed to obtain prior approval for medication he recently used to treat a condition diagnosed during his college years. The Tour confirmed that this medication is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list of banned substances.
This makes Mullinax the ninth player to face suspension since the PGA Tour implemented its anti-doping program in 2008.
He will be eligible to return to competition on January 16 next year.
Mullinax, who has one PGA Tour victory to his name, lost his tour card after finishing 150th in the FedEx Corporation Cup standings last season. This year, he’s competed in three events, including tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour.
In a statement, Mullinax admitted his oversight, saying that he should have been more diligent in reviewing the regulations before taking the medication. It was his responsibility, and he failed to do so. He emphasized that he did not use the substance for performance enhancement.
In a similar case involving a Korean player, Byeong Hun An received a three-month suspension in 2023 after a banned substance was detected in cold medication he had taken.
