The Los Angeles (LA) Angels, struggling to secure a playoff berth in Major League Baseball (MLB), have made a bold move by dismissing three pitching coaches.
The Angels announced on Wednesday that they have fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant coach Daryl Scott, and bullpen coach Dom Chiti ahead of their home game against the Texas Rangers in the 2026 MLB season.
The Angels, who haven’t tasted October baseball since 2014, are having another disappointing season with a 45-74 record, languishing at the bottom of the American League West.
With 43 games left to play, they’re 15 games behind the American League Wild Card cutoff, making their postseason chances virtually non-existent.
The Halos have struggled on both sides of the ball, posting a team on-base plus slugging (OPS) percentage of 0.688 and a team earned run average (ERA) of 4.51. Most alarmingly, Angels pitchers have issued a league-high 508 walks.
Interim General Manager (GM) John Mozeliak explained that after consulting with Manager Kurt Suzuki, it concluded that change was necessary. It’s committed to elevating the entire pitching staff over the next seven weeks and will explore additional measures to build a foundation for future success.
Tim Laker will step in as the interim pitching coach, while Michael Wuertz will assume the role of interim bullpen coach to guide the Angels’ pitching staff.
