A man in his 40s who has been arranging prostitution in an officetel by hiring foreign women in Jeju Island has been caught by the police.

The Jeju Seobu Police Station announced on the 16th that they are investigating a suspect in his 40s on charges of violating the law regarding the punishment of acts of arranging prostitution.

According to the police, the man is accused of operating his leased officetel in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju-si, as a prostitution establishment from the second half of last year to the 9th of this month.

The suspect connected male customers he got in touch with through prostitution website advertisements with the foreign women he hired, receiving KRW 120,000 to KRW 600,000 ($106 to $530) per person.

It was revealed that the suspect avoided police crackdown by having foreign women who entered the country on tourist visas stay in the officetel and contact them through social media such as WeChat and Telegram.

Based on intelligence, the police conducted a surprise raid on the scene on the 9th and seized $1,842, 39 condoms, and one mobile phone.

A police official said, “We will strengthen the monitoring of prostitution arrangement sites and carry out strong crackdowns to eradicate illegal prostitution activities, which are becoming increasingly intelligent and hidden.”
