On July 11, 1405, Zheng He, a court eunuch of the Ming Dynasty, embarked on his first expedition (Xia Xiyang). This series of seven expeditions continued until 1433 and showcased the Ming Dynasty’s powerful military and diplomatic influence around the world.
In the early 15th century, the Ming Dynasty flourished under the rule of the Yongle Emperor, Zhu Di. This period marked a golden age, with the subduing neighboring countries through formidable naval power, expanding vast territories, and receiving tributes from across the world. However, trade in the southern seas was declining, and rampant piracy threatened the stability of existing trade routes.
In response, the Yongle Emperor planned a large-scale maritime expedition to establish new sea trade routes and display the Ming Dynasty grandeur to the world. The primary goals were to open new trade routes, increase the number of tribute countries, and activate trade. He also aimed to showcase the Ming Dynasty’s powerful naval forces and gain international recognition as the Emperor of the World.
Zheng He, with his exceptional leadership and maritime experience, successfully led these expeditions. He embarked on a perilous voyage to Southeast Asia, India, Saudi Arabia, and the east coast of Africa, commanding a massive fleet composed of tens of thousands of soldiers and hundreds of ships.
At that time, the Ming Dynasty boasted the world’s most advanced shipbuilding technology. Zheng He’s fleet included a giant wooden ship called a treasure ship, which was the largest ship in the world at that time. These advanced ships demonstrated formidable capabilities in navigation and naval battles.
Zheng He’s expedition yielded remarkable results. The Ming Dynasty received tributes from about 30 countries, significantly revitalizing overseas trade. The powerful naval forces of the Ming Dynasty were publicized to the world, elevating its international status. Despite the massive costs, loss of life, and inciting social and cultural conflicts due to encounters with new civilizations, Zheng He’s expeditions are considered one of the most important maritime explorations in the history of the Ming Dynasty.
