South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has called for a comprehensive investigation into the recent proliferation of deepfake videos on social media. He emphasized that “the relevant authorities should thoroughly understand the situation and investigate to eradicate these digital sex crimes.”

During a cabinet meeting at the presidential office in Yongsan this morning, Yoon said, “Deepfake videos targeting the general public have been spreading rapidly on social media recently.”

He continued, “Many of the victims are minors, and most of the perpetrators are also teenagers. Although some might dismiss this as just a prank, it is a serious criminal act that uses technology and anonymity. Any one of us could fall victim to these digital sex crimes.”

Yoon expressed optimism about the upcoming session of the 22nd National Assembly. He said, “I hope the assembly will focus on important issues related to people’s livelihoods and future challenges during this session and achieve meaningful results.”

He pointed out that since the beginning of the 22nd National Assembly, the government has introduced over 200 bills. “The core goal of governance is the happiness of our citizens,” he said. “Achieving that happiness is a measure of the government’s success.” Yoon urged cabinet members to work diligently to ensure the effective passage of bills related to public welfare.

Yoon highlighted that with autumn approaching, the likelihood of typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula increases, particularly as rising sea temperatures can intensify these storms. He cautioned that historically, the most severe typhoons often occur between late August and September, underscoring the importance of thorough preparation.

He reiterated, “As I’ve consistently stressed, effective disaster response starts with managing the basics well. When a disaster strikes, it’s essential to implement control measures and evacuate hazardous areas promptly.”
